Chapter 1
In February 2003, I located documents probably not seen by anyone in the Chumley family in one-hundred and seven years. In 1896, Thompson Chumley, many of his children, the children of Mary Chumley Whitmore, and Caroline Chumley Mills submitted applications to the Dawes Commission claiming they had Cherokee Indian blood. These claims were rejected because neither Jeff O’Shields/O’Sheal nor Mary/Polly Chumley had Cherokee Indian ancestry.
Thousands of American citizens applied for the Cherokee Indian funds. Many did so because they knew nothing about the history of their ancestors. Many applied simply because they hoped to claim land or money from the federal government. If an individual could not prove his or her Cherokee Indian heritage, the claim was rejected, so it was with the Chumley family who settled first in Jackson County, next in Hall County, and finally in Lumpkin County (name later changed to Dawson County).
William Chumley nee O’Shields was probably born in Spartanburg or Union County, South Carolina, sometime between 1790-1795. He removed to Jackson County, Georgia, sometime before the 1830 Census
William Chumley was the son of Jeff O’SHIELDS. He assumed his Mother’s maiden name CHUMLEY. William Chumley nee O’Shields’ children did not know the ancestry of their O’Shields family. Rumors circulated which said the O’Shields name was mispronounced and should have been “OSHEE,” and OSHEE was interpreted as a Cherokee Indian name. It is without doubt this rumor was the impetus for the children of William Chumley nee O’Shields to assume they were entitled to receive land or funds from the federal government. Forty-three pages of applications were sent to prove Cherokee Indian heritage. All forty-three pages were rejected.

Gentlemen: The undersigned, your petitioner, Thompson CHUMLEY, for and on behalf of himself and heirs, this day makes this their application to you for the purpose of being placed on the revised roll of Cherokee Indians and of those entitled to share in the distribution of funds and allotments of land in Cherokee Nation, by virtue of their Cherokee blood, and I herewith submit the following:
“I am the son of William O’SHIELDS, known as William CHUMLEY.
My Mother’s name was Martha CHUMLEY.
William O’SHIELDS was son of JEFF O’SHIELDS.”

“I am the daughter of one William O’Shields called William Chumley and he was the son of Jeff O’Shields.”
Caroline stated she was a citizen of the said county and state and was sixty-six years of age.
Caroline recounted the following:
“I well remember my Father Wiliam O’Shields (or William Chumley). He was about thirty to thirty-five years older than myself and we were living in Hall County when the Cherokees were removed to the west from this State…My grandfather Jeff O’Shields died before the census rolls were taken and before Indians were moved west. I am the sister of Thompson Chumley, sister of Richard Whitmore’s and William Whitmore’s mother who was named Polly and I am the mother of George & William Mills and their childrens grandmother, these people are descended from my ancestors, Jeff O’Shields my Grand Father, and William O’Shields or Chumley my Father.”

William was a Baptist minister. He traveled to church services at Amicalola, Corinth, or Juno by mule. If the church was too far to return home before night, he stayed in the homes of the congregation and received $2.50 for a week of revival ministry. Miss Lola Chumley, 87, died Sunday, August 3, 2003. Miss Chumley was a native of Pickens County who lived most of her life in Dawson County. She was a homemaker and member of Juno Baptist Church in Dawson County. She was the daughter of the late William Mason and Ollie Kuykendall Chumley and was also preceded in death by her brother, Lonnie Chumley. She was the last surviving member of her family. She is survived by several friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 2:00 PM at the Juno Baptist Church in Dawson County with the remains placed in state at the church at 1:30 PM. Revs. Hugh Fields and Lawton Burt officiated and interment followed in the church cemetery. Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega was in charge of the arrangements.
