Advice to a Novice in Genealogy

While finishing my 2003 O’Sheal book, several mysterious messages appeared on websites that have been proven to be lies and were attempts to discourage me from publishing in August 2003. Please read the following messages, and ask yourself, “Who was the person or persons who wrote these messages?”

Hello

I have tried to contact you before but got a returned email, so I will post this for you.

My information shows that the Daniel O’Shields you are asking about had three sons named Jefferson, John, and Jethro. I am interested in all three. The named Jefferson was nicknamed Jeffrey or Jeff and he died about 1828. We think he was married twice. His first wife could have been a Simpson, and he later

married a Chumley (or Chumbly or Chumbler) who brought a son to the marriage. The son was named William Chumbly (or Chumley) was the son of a Littlefield and was adopted by this Jefferson O’Shields. Some of the family later settled into Georgia.

Hello all

I am seeking data on a Mary Chumbly (or Chumbler, or Chumley). She had a child named William Chumbly (William Chumley) in Spartanburg County, SC in the 1790’s by a man named Solomon Littlefield. Some years later the child was adopted into the O’Shields family and this Mary “Polly” Chumbly married Jefferson O’Shields. I can prove that this William Chumbly was the son of Solomon Littlefield and Mary Chumbly but I need more information on both the O’Shields and Chumley families so I can see which wife of Jefferson O’Shields I come from, since he married as his second wife the lady named Mary “Polly” Chumley.

The O’Shields and the Chumley family later went into Georgia. I have found the name Thompson Chumley and wonder how he fits into the family.

Hi Mrs. Stringer

I saw your posting about all the Chumleys in Spartanburg County, SC being related. I don’t know anything about the Buck or Baxter you are telling about, but I am hoping you might have more early information on Chumleys in Spartanburg County, SC.

Thirteen days after the bogus messages were posted, another new person surfaced. This time it was a woman named, Joan Brown. I now present her message.

Hello to Oshields family

I have some information on the Oshields family but it may be a different family as the name is mostly Osheal in what I have. I had a cousin in CA who collected lots of old books and old papers and things. She did name histories and was doing a book on Irish names but died before she got it done. Someone told me these old books could be valuable so I am putting this on the internet and if the Mormons church who does genelogy or another library dont have it then I will donate to them or sell to a dealer who has asked for it.

I am not genelogist and I am not related to this family.

I think I am writing to the right family. I have a family newletter put out in the 1940s and it says OSHEAL but I think in one place it said OSHIELDS so this must be the same family as some names are the same as your letters.

What I need to know is if the Mormons church has this info? If they do, then I wont donate to them.

This says Family News (Osheal Family) published by Mrs. Pearl Waterfield, Oct.1947 etc etc.

The names mentioned are the same as in your letters like David Oshields and many others. It talks about family coat of arms. It also says will of David Osheal is now found in Virginia, etc, etc and other things.

One part of this newsletter says John Osheal married Ann Boush, and had four children, so I think this is your family but am not sure. Please let me know if the Mormons has this, then I will sell it to the dealer or donate it.

Thanks for listening.

I am not a genelogist, and dont know if I have written on the right place. Please see my other letters on other familys as I am starting to put this on the net on these Irish families.

While reading these messages it becomes obvious they were all written by ONE in the same person. The question will be asked, “Why would a person write such lies?”

The answer to this question is also obvious. If someone could have convinced me that I was not related to the O’Shields or O’Sheal family, that person would have benefited from my research and claimed it as his or her research and published it in his or her name. Well, the plan didn’t work.

While reading these messages it becomes obvious they were all written by ONE in the same person. It doesn’t take a college professor to see the TRUTH.

The question will be asked, “Why would a person write such lies?”

The answer to this question is also obvious. If someone could have convinced me that I was not related to the O’Shields or O’Sheal family, that person would have benefited from my research and claimed it as HIS research and published it in his name.

Well, the plan didn’t work. I knew who had invented the lie, but I couldn’t prove it to my cousin. He was as blinded as many of you. I tried my best to tell myself I was wrong and continued with the plan to allow a certain individual to place pages into my book.

As I have said many many times, I was tired from working a full time job, researching, and writing, and I was under a time constraint because I was returning to school in August.

A packet of papers arrived at my cousin’s house, he had to re-type most of it because it was so poorly done. Then, we rushed the next day to the printers.

We were “caught off guard” with all the stories, letters, memoirs, and other materials.

I did not read the material before it went to the printer. I was incompetent and failed to proof-read. I trusted my cousin had read through everything. The day I received the book I called Michael and read some of the material mailed to him. Michael’s remark was, “It sounds like _ _ _ _ took our research and wrote a story about it.”

It was only at that moment my brain clicked into reality, and I knew we had been conned.

It didn’t take long for a final confirmation we truly had been conned when some three or so weeks later a lady contacted me and said she had something that sounded like my book. As she read the words to me, and I followed along with my book, the TRUTH was revealed.

The person who mailed my book to the lady in Greenville, SC, had removed my name and Michael’s name and claimed he had been working on it since 2001.

Then, an attorney was contacted, and most of you have heard the rest of the story.

You will now decide whether you want to continue believing a LIE and the person who is the maker of LIES, or do you want to accept the TRUTH.
