Who were the parents of Samuel O’Shields and Wiley O’Shields?
The following information was taken from OSHEAL-CHUMLEY, Copyright 2003, page 108, published by Connie Chumley Stringer, and this section of the book was researched, compiled, and written by J. V. Michael Motes:
1. Samuel O’Shields was b. aft. 1799 in Spartanburg, SC.
Notes for Samuel O’Shields:
Although he has been reported to be the son of Jefferson OSheal/O’Shields, requests for documentation of this have failed to bring results. In 1850, Samuel was living in the Sanford District of Lumpkin County, Georgia. Samuel’s son, Joshua, latter appears in Dawson County, Georgia, with members of the Chumley family.
1850 Census, Lumpkin Co., GA, Samford District, 28 November 1850, page 46A, household number 17:
O’Shield, Samuel, age 51, born SC
O’Shield, Elizabeth, age 26, born SC
O’Shield, David, age 25, born SC
O’Shield, Catherine, age 22, born SC
O’Shield, Hiram, age 15, born SC
O’Shield, John, age 5, born SC
His son Hiram O’Shields stated in his application for a pension as a Confederate veteran that he had been a resident of Georgia since 15 August 1845, so it is presumed that it was about at this time that Samuel O’Shields and his family moved from South Carolina.
Living near to Samuel O’Shields was WILEY O’Shields, who is perhaps his brother.
1850 Census, Lumpkin Co., GA, Samford District, 28 November 1850, page 46B, household number 27:
O’Shield, Wiley, age 49, born SC
O’Shield, Mary, age 49, born SC
O’Shield, Harvey, age 21, born SC
O’Shield, William, age 20, born SC
O’Shield, John, age 18, born SC
O’Shield, Ann, age 17, born SC
O’Shield, Barbara, age 17, born SC
O’Shield, Benjamin, age 12, born SC

On 02 October 1843, Joshua O’Sheal and his wife, Elizabeth, were among the heirs who sold their share in the estate of her father, Thomas Bell, deceased. This transaction is recorded in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, Deed Bk. Y, pages 297-298.
