Gasaway 11 August 1886. He was born 14 February 1843 in South Carolina, and died 03 October 1915 in Cobb County, Georgia.
Mary Margaret Rice Gasaway is buried beside her son, Wesley Clayton Gasaway, at Macland Cemetery, Cobb County, Georgia.
Her tombstone reads–“Margaret Elizabeth Gasaway“. This information is incorrect. Her real name was Mary Margaret and was listed as such in census records with her parents and her husband, Phillip N. Gasaway.
Mary Margaret (Mattie) Rice was the mother of an illegitimate son. His name was Thomas Eugene Rice, born 16 May 1883, and died 1955. He is buried at Friendship Methodist Church, Oconee County, South Carolina. Thomas Eugene Rice was reared by his grandparents, Baylis Rice and Elizabeth Burkett Rice. He may have been born in Cobb County, Georgia, because his mother appears to have moved to Cobb County with her sister, Sarah (Sallie) Rice Whitten and her husband, John B. Whitten.
My grandmother, Bertha Brown Gasaway (1897-1974), stated that when her mother-in-law, Mary Margaret (Mattie) Rice Gasaway, married Phillip N. Gasaway, Thomas Eugene Rice was living with his mother and his step-father in Cobb County, Georgia. Mattie’s husband would not accept her son, and Phillip N. Gasaway demanded she send Eugene to his grandparents in Oconee County, South Carolina. Eugene was removed from his mother at the age of three. He was listed in his grandparents’ home in the 1900 Census Records in Anderson County, South Carolina. (Baylis Rice and Elizabeth Burkett Rice)
Notes for Phillip Nicholas Gasaway:
The 1910 Census, Cobb County, Georgia, gives Phillips birthday as February 1847.
His tombstone gives date of birth February 14, 1843, with the following inscription:
“It was hard in deed to part with thee, but Christ’s strong arm supported me.”
On the other side: Volunteered 1861, 1st SC Rifles, Co. A
Phillip enlisted in Pickens County, South Carolina, at the Sandy Springs Methodist Church Campground, as part of Orr’s Rifles.

Last Tuesday he was stricken with paralysis and never regained consciousness until death relieved him Sunday at noon. His funeral was conducted by Rev. J. R. Speer and the interment was at Mt. Zion Monday afternoon. He leaves a wife and thirteen children, eight by his first marriage and five by his last marriage. The pall bearers were six of his grandsons, and the beautiful flowers were carried by a number of his grand-daughters. I suspect Willis Burkett born ca 1810 SC may be the brother of George Washington Burkett born 1813 SC.
He was married to Martha E. who apparently died before the 1880 census because on the 1880 SC Oconee Co census we find Willis married to Amanda born 1844 SC
I actually have been following his son William Hanes Burkett born 28 Oct 1852

Yes, he was the brother of George W. Burkett. I am placing what I have on this family in a new post. It’s not complete but all I have so far.
I descend from the d/o George W. Burkett and Margaret Dennington.

Wayn,
I do not know if we are related, but I will do some investigation. What do you know about your John Gazaway who died in Fish Creek, GA? Do you have a date of birth?
You said, “Franis Gazaway.” Did you mean to write the name “Francis”?
